Mixing hydrogen generated by renewable energy (green hydrogen) into the existing natural gas grid plays a vital role in reducing greenhouse gas emission in the metal industry. However, renewable energy, e.g. sun and wind, is widely non-constant. Thus, green hydrogen can change strongly and its mixture affects the gas property. Such will in turn affect the flame geometry and the radiation intensity in gas-fired heating systems. The variation in gas property has a negative impact on product quality, process stability and energy efficiency. A German university of applied sciences and two industrial companies would like to set up a project aiming at determining the gas property in real time by AI-based image recognition. With the knowledge of the precise gas property one can control the gas-fired heating system efficiently. The images of flame geometry and radiation intensities will be acquired using broadband furnace cameras. The flame geometry and radiant intensities will extend the current process control metrics. Thus, a new process control algorithm will be developed. 

Advantages/ Innovation

The project result will be implemented as a practical solution for energy efficient process control in application cases of green hydrogen mixture. The technology will be marketed as a partial or full solution for thermal processes as well as for machine and plant manufacturers in the metal industry.
