Thomas Südhof

Thomas Christian Südhof received his degree and PhD from the University of Göttingen. After training at the Max Planck Institute and UT Southwestern, he began his independent career in 1986. In 2008, he became a professor at Stanford. Awarded the Nobel Prize in 2013, he studies the mechanisms of neurotransmitter release and synapse formation.

Melino Gennaro

Gennaro Melino, director of the department and professor of Biochemistry, graduated from La Sapienza University in 1978 and, after a career in London, returned to Tor Vergata University in 1985. He has received the Feltrinelli Prize (2009) and the Antonini Prize (2010), as well as an honorary doctorate (Doctor Honoris Causa) in 2012. His research focuses on cell death and the p53 family, with applications in oncology and dermatology.

Silvia Franceschi

Silvia Franceschi, a graduate in Medicine with specializations in Gynecology and Health Statistics, and a Master's in Epidemiology from Oxford, has contributed to understanding the role of HPV in cervical, anal, and oropharyngeal cancers. She has promoted HPV screenings and vaccinations in Asia and Africa. Since 2018, she has returned to Italy at Centro di Riferimento Oncologico (Aviano) as Scientific Director (interim until 2021).

Silvia G. Priori

Silvia Priori graduated in Medicine and specialized in Cardiology at the University of Milan, with a PhD in Cardiovascular Pathophysiology. After a post-doctoral fellowship in the USA, she returned to Italy in 1996. She is currently a Full Professor and Director of the Cardiology School in Pavia, leads the Molecular Cardiology Unit in Pavia, and coordinates a research group in New York, focusing on inherited arrhythmogenic diseases.

Paola Bonfante

Paola Bonfante, who earned her degree in Biological Sciences from the University of Turin in 1970 and was a professor of Plant Biology from 1984 to 2017, is now honorary professor. She has studied plant-microorganism interactions, particularly mycorrhizae, which are essential for 90% of plants. She served on the CNR Scientific Committee (2012-2016) and is a member of the Academy of Sciences of Turin (since 2000), the French Academy of Agriculture (2017), and the italian Accademia dei Lincei (2011). She is among the most cited Italian researchers worldwide.

Patrizia Caraveo

Patrizia Caraveo graduated in Physics from the University of Milan in 1977. After experiences abroad, she joined the Cosmic Physics Institute of the CNR, now part of INAF. Since 2002, she has been a Research Director and the Director of the Institute for Space Astrophysics in Milan. She has collaborated on space missions such as COS-B, Integral, Swift, Agile, and Fermi, and contributed to the identification of the Geminga pulsar. She received the National Prize from the President of the Republic in 2009 and several accolades from the American Astronomical Society, including the Outstanding Achievement Award in 2014. She is listed among the Highly Cited Researchers of 2014 by Thomson Reuters.

Markku Kulmala

Professor Markku Kulmala is the head of the Division of Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Helsinki and the leader of the Finnish Center of Excellence in Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Meteorology of Atmospheric Composition and Climate Change, working with over 150 scientists. He has led two Nordic Centers of Excellence and coordinated the European project EUCAARI. He has published over 600 research articles, including 8 in Nature and 11 in Science, with an H-index of 61 and more than 15,000 citations.

Frank Dentener

Frank Dentener has been working for 25 years in the fields of air pollution, climate change, and agriculture. He is a senior expert at the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre and earned his PhD in Physics under Nobel laureate Paul Crutzen. He is a member of the scientific committee of JPI FACCE and co-chair of the Scientific Advisory Group of the WMO. He has published over 200 peer-reviewed articles and 3 IPCC reports, with an H-index of 80, and is one of the most cited scientists according to Thomson-Reuters. His expertise includes atmospheric chemistry-land interactions, ozone impacts on agriculture, and climate change.
