INNOVATIVE MODELS
OF CARE, THERAPY
AND PREVENTION

WINNERS

The 2023 “Lombardy is Research” Prize has been awarded to Steven Rosenberg and Carl H. June for the development of immunotherapy with natural and genetically modified cells. Immunotherapy, one of the great successes of modern medicine, is the treatment of tumors with cells from the immune system of the patient, which go on to kill the tumor cells. Another form of immunotherapy, using monoclonal antibodies directed at so-called checkpoint inhibitors, removes the brakes on immune cells without needing to isolate them from the patient. A variable proportion of patients, depending on the tumor type, is completely cured with immunotherapy and does not relapse.
