RESEARCH DAY
IN MEMORY OF UMBERTO VERONESI
9th EDITION
Milano, Teatro alla Scala
November 10 2026

The 2026 “Lombardia è Ricerca” International Prize, on the theme “Predictive medicine based on artificial intelligence and big data”, has been awarded to English bioinformatician Ewan Birney, Director of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory’s European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI). Professor Birney’s work focuses on sequencing technologies and the algorithms used in this field. Birney won the prize for his groundbreaking contribution to computational biology, genomics and AI-based predictive medicine: in other words, for turning vast streams of biological and clinical data into predictive models that can be applied to human diseases.
On November 10, 2026 the prestigious Teatro alla Scala in Milan will host the ninth edition of Regione Lombardia’s Research Day. Established in memory of Umberto Veronesi on the anniversary of his passing, Research Day celebrates the fundamental value that science and innovation play in improving citizen's quality of life.
The event, open to the public, aims to promote the strategic value of research and innovation for the development of the Lombardy region to a broad audience. The highlight of the ceremony is the presentation of the International “Lombardy is Research” Award, which in 2026 will be dedicated to predictive medicine based on artificial intelligence and big data.
Applications are assessed by an International Jury of 15 top scientists, selected through the Scopus system from among those with the highest H-index in the subject areas listed alongside.
The jury is joined by Mark Caulfield and Douglas Easton, winners of the 8th edition of the "Lombardia è Ricerca" International Prize. Caulfield is Vice Principal for Health at Queen Mary University of London and Director of the NIHR Barts Biomedical Research Centre. Easton is Professor of Genetic Epidemiology at the University of Cambridge.
For the 2026 edition, the Prize Jury is made up as follows:
