INTERNATIONAL PRIZE
"LOMBARDY IS RESEARCH"
2026 Edition

Predictive Medicine Based on Artificial Intelligence and Big Data

Applications open from March 2 to June 16, 2026

The Winner

The 2026 “Lombardia è Ricerca” International Prize, on the theme “Predictive medicine based on artificial intelligence and big data”, has been awarded to English bioinformatician Ewan Birney, Director of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory’s European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI). Professor Birney’s work focuses on sequencing technologies and the algorithms used in this field. Birney won the prize for his groundbreaking contribution to computational biology, genomics and AI-based predictive medicine: in other words, for turning vast streams of biological and clinical data into predictive models that can be applied to human diseases.

The Prize

The International “Lombardy is Research” is a 1 million euro prize established by Lombardy Region to acknowledge scientists of any nationality who have made a significant contribution to the advancement of Life Sciences.

For the 2026 edition, the Award will be presented to researchers who have distinguished themselves in the field of predictive medice based on artificial intelligence and big data, with the aim of improving citizen's life expectancy and quality of life.

30% of the Prize is awarded to the winning scientist(s), while 70% is allocated to support a translational research project associated with the application, to be carried out in collaboration with one or more public or private research institutions in Lombardy; this 70% share may be allocated exclusively to research organizations located in Lombardy.

THE JURY

15 top scientists

The Theme

For the 2026 edition, the Prize will be granted to innovations and scientific, pharmacological and technological contributions in the following areas of interest:

MACHINE LEARNING AND PREDICTIVE MODELS

  • Development of artificial intelligence models to predict the onset of chronic diseases (such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, cancer and dementias);
  • Language Models for the identifications of predictive patterns;
  • Risk stratification of populations.
GENOMICS, EPIGENOMICS AND PREDICTIVE BIOMARKERS
  • Identification of genetic and epigenetic variants associated with individual risk;
  • Polygenic Risk Scores for predictive precision medicine;
  • Multi-omics approaches for predictive molecular endotypes.
DIGITAL HEALTH AND CONTINUOUS MONITORING
  • Artificial intelligence applied to predictive medical imaging;
  • Predictive remote monitoring platforms for at-risk populations.

How to partecipate

As in the previous edition, self-nomination remains the application method. Each scientist may submit their own application, either individually or jointly (indicating up to two colleagues with whom the research work has been shared), outlining the relevant scientific contribution made within the theme "Predictive Medicine Based on Artificial Intelligence and Big Data" and simultaneously presenting a translational research project aimed at consolidating research activities to be carried out in collaboration with one or more public or private research institutions based in Lombardy.

When to submit an application

IT IS NO LONGER POSSIBLE TO SUBMIT APPLICATIONS

Applications should have been submitted exclusively online, by completing the application form from 2 March to 16 July 2026.
